FAQs About TMJ Disorder

Do you suffer from jaw stiffness, frequent headaches and other symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)? Chiropractic tmjcare, offered by your Broken Arrow, OK, chiropractors, Drs. Brent and Doug Newcomb may offer a simple solution to your painful problem.

What is TMJ?

TMJ affects the hinge joints in the jaw, located just below your ears on both sides of your face. A complex system of bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles keep jaw movements smooth and comfortable. If any of these structures become misaligned, damaged or stressed, you may experience TMJ symptoms.

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

Jaw pain and stiffness are the symptoms most often associated with TMJ, but they're not the only ones. If you have the disorder, you may also experience:

  • Headaches, particularly in the morning
  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
  • Temporary jaw locking
  • Popping or clicking sounds when you move your jaw
  • Bite problems
  • Stiffness in the muscles of your neck, shoulders and upper back
  • Ringing in your ears, ear pain or fullness in the ears
  • Pain and tingling in your face or chin

Why do I have TMJ?

It's not always possible to determine the cause of TMJ, but certain factors may increase your risk. You may be more likely to develop the disorder if you grind your teeth while you sleep, have a bite problem or a previous jaw injury, feel stressed often, or have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or rheumatoid arthritis.

How can my Broken Arrow chiropractor help me?

Your chiropractor will develop a treatment plan for you after a thorough examination and a discussion of your symptoms. Chiropractic treatments can be helpful in reducing pressure on your nerves by easing tension in the jaw. Once the pressure is relieved, you'll experience less pain. Treatment may also involve relaxing tight muscles in the joints of your neck, back and shoulders.
