Do I Have Carpel Tunnel?

Are you concerned that the nagging pain in your wrist might be a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome? Doug Newcomb, D.C. and R. Brent Newcomb, D.C.; your Broken Arrow, OK, chiropractors, share some information about carpal tunnel symptoms and treatments.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve that travels through your wrist to your hand becomes compressed. Prompt treatment of the problem is essential because the longer your nerve remains compressed, the more likely you'll suffer nerve damage.

What are common carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms?

If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, you may notice:

  • Pain, burning, tingling or numbness in your wrist, forearm, or thumb and middle, index and ring fingers. Pain and tingling may not be confined to your hand and wrist, but may also extend up your arm to your shoulder.
  • Weakness in your hand that makes it difficult to grip or hold objects
  • Electric shock sensations in your hand and wrist
  • Pain in your wrist or hand that wakes you up at night
  • Tight or swollen hands
  • Constant hot or cold feeling in your hands

Who gets carpal tunnel syndrome?

You may be more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome if:

  • You perform the same motions over and over, such as typing, sewing, swinging a golf club or playing a musical instrument.
  • You are pregnant.
  • You have rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis or thyroid disease.
  • You fractured your wrist in the past or have bone spurs or cysts.
  • You smoke.

How can my chiropractor help?

Your Broken Arrow chiropractor will perform a thorough examination and ask you questions regarding your lifestyle, job, and hobbies, which will help him develop a diagnosis and treatment plan. Chiropractic treatment not only focuses on your wrist and hand, but also involves the upper arm and spine, as spinal alignment problems can contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Your chiropractor will recommend exercises that will help reduce the pressure on your median nerve and may use a variety of treatments, including ultrasound therapy and wrist supports, to ease your pain.
